12 Poles

Goal(s) :
Work on rhythm and balance over an evolving geometric layout.
The central square allows a straight or angled approach, offering two levels of difficulty within the same exercise. The adjustable poles then lead onto a circle on the right rein or left rein, making it an ideal tool both for the intermediate horse and for a horse in rehabilitation.
The exercise also develops bend and the horse’s ability to feel and control the placement of its limbs in space — knowing where it puts its feet without looking, by playing with the approach angles.
Process :
First approach: ride into the square at the walk or trot. The slight elevation of the poles parallel to the square on blocks encourages the horse to mobilise its shoulders.
Choice of direction: on leaving the square, turn right or left to ride back into it.
Bend work: inside the square, establish right or left bend, then ride over the poles on a diagonal line at the walk while maintaining that bend.
Back onto the circle: at the end of the diagonals, the horse naturally returns to the right or left rein to link up with another repetition.
Difficulties :
Intermediate — Galop 6/7
Exercise suitable from Galop 6–7 level upwards.
An independent seat and good management of bend are necessary to get the full benefit from the layout.
Adjustable to the horse: straight entry at the walk for horses in rehabilitation; linking the diagonals at the trot for more advanced combinations.
