Goal(s)

To work on impulsion, responsiveness, and flexion/acceptance of the bit during transitions.

Process

Begin by picking up canter on a straight line, then ride onto a 20m or 15m circle. Make a downward transition to trot halfway around the circle (marked by a gate with cones). Maintain this gait for a quarter of the circle, then transition back to canter for the final quarter and continue on the straight line in canter. The exercise can also be performed in trot/walk/trot or canter/walk/canter transitions.

Difficulties

Accuracy, responsiveness

Variations in frame and head height help challenge the horse’s balance and therefore the tone of his thoracic sling.
