Necessary equipment
2 Poles
2 Cavalettis
2 Cones
Goal(s) :
The aim is to use lateral work to achieve straightness, then proceed to jump the cavaletti, all while managing the horse's pace. This exercise develops straightness, lateral suppleness, accuracy of track, and quality of canter in front of a jump.
Process :
Place the obstacle in the center of the arena: a simple vertical and a ground pole. Approach at the trot, with the horse bent in the direction of movement. From the corner, ask for a leg-yield (or shoulder-in, depending on level). The lateral movement should bring you directly in line with the cavaletti. Midway through the lateral movement at trot, ask for canter—⚠️ all while maintaining the lateral movement. As you approach the fence, between the cones, stop asking for the lateral movement but maintain the straightness it has created. Jump the cavaletti with a straight, attentive, and responsive horse under control. After the fence, release the contact and allow the horse to canter on a loose rein. The exercise should be immediately rewarded by relaxation. Gradually, you can increase the height while keeping the horse jumping straight and between your aids.
Difficulties :
The main challenge is that all the preparation before the jump is actually the most important part. This is true flatwork before the poles. You must maintain calmness and relaxation while seeking straightness and impulsion.
