Goal(s)

Acclimate the horse to different obstacles

Process

This exercise is performed only at a walk.

Start beside the horse, move the hindquarters between the cones, then walk onto the tarp, stopping so that the horse has all four hooves on the tarp.
The two front hooves should be in the same hoop and the two hind hooves in the other hoop, then stop. Walk back over the tarp and stop again at the same spot as before, continue and turn left to move the shoulders between the cones.
Continue straight and walk over the tarp without stopping!
Between the cones, make the horse back up and cross the finish line.
The final step is to praise at the finish and every time your horse overcomes its fears.

Difficulties

The tarp can be intimidating for the horse.

Groundwork | Easy

This exercise is often feared or even avoided, because we tend to believe that show jumping horses should never step into the water. Fake news! In this exercise, you’ll teach your horse to walk on a tarp so that later on, you can safely introduce jumping a water tray.
